HAMPTON ROADS, VIRGINIA: Research Spotlight on Norfolk takes a look at the resurgence of Norfolk’s downtown. Since the early 1800’s, Norfolk has served as a catalyst for economic growth due to its unique collection of regional assets that make it so ideal for trade. However, urban sprawl and other drivers over the years have diffused the commercial and residential focus from downtown. Now things are coming full circle as evidenced by an increase in demand for office space downtown, recent retail developments, a state of the art hotel and conference center, and a newly-dubbed arts district as Norfolk re-establishes itself as a vibrant epicenter to live, work, and play.
