Winners Announced for 30th Annual Thalhimer Challenge | Richmond Tennis Association Club Challenge

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA: Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer and the Richmond Tennis Association (RTA) hosted the 30th annual Club Challenge, Thalhimer Challenge, this past weekend, September 21-24, 2023. Salisbury Country Club and Westwood Club served as hosts. Twelve teams competed for the Championship – ACAC, Burkwood, Country Club of Virginia, Dominion, Hermitage, Midlothian Athletic Club, Midlothian Tennis Club, Raintree, Salisbury, Westwood Club, Willow Oaks, and Woodlake. Each team had players competing at the USTA-rated levels from 3.0 to 5.0 and above. The competition was doubles only, with two men’s, two women’s, and one mixed doubles team at each level, except 5.0+, which had one men’s and one mixed doubles team. The qualifying play was held for the first three days. Six clubs advanced out of qualifying to advance to the finals on Sunday. The tournament winner was the club that accumulated the most points on the final day.

“Richmond this weekend proved it continues to be one of the best tennis towns in America,” said Lee Warfield, President & CEO of Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer. The event rosters nearly 1,000 players who compete across almost 400 doubles matches and is one of the most anticipated events on the tennis calendar. “There was amazing tennis all weekend long, and the spirit of competition and camaraderie was on full display,” noted Warfield.

Added this year was a Thursday night kick-off that brought together all 12 clubs to begin the competition with a celebratory atmosphere. “Thursday was a great example of the Richmond tennis community coming together—it represented what this event is all about.”

“Congratulations to Salisbury for winning the coveted trophy,” continued Warfield, “Scott Steinour has built a strong tennis program and culture—what a great way to celebrate it.” This is the first time Salisbury has raised the trophy in the 26 years it has been a part of the competition. Steinour is the Director of Tennis for Salisbury Country Club.

“Thalhimer continues to be excited about being the title sponsor of this event and supporting the RTA in its mission,” said Lee Warfield. “The RTA is a non-profit organization that is focused on the growth and love of tennis in the greater Richmond region. Beyond the Thalhimer Challenge, the RTA creates pathways for juniors to learn the game, runs tournaments for adults, and helps bring tennis to underserved youth and communities. Through our Thalhimer Gives community outreach program, our associates support various non-profit groups that positively impact where we live. Our team loves supporting the RTA and Thalhimer Challenge,” stated Warfield.

Thalhimer Challenge showcases Central Virginia’s finest tennis players from all levels. It demonstrates how tennis can be a sport of friendly competition, team spirit, and a way to support a great cause. “We thank the Richmond Tennis Association and the two host sites of Salisbury and Westwood for its many volunteers and the effort to make it a special player and fan experience,” said Warfield.
